These hunting weapons (and unfortunately weapons of war too) appeared 22.000 years ago for the atlatl and 13.000 years ago for the bow.
The most beautiful specimen ever found (Stellmoor, Holmegaard, Similaun) prove that humans have early recognized and used the specific qualities of a few woods (mostly ash and yew) which are still used nowadays.
Magdalenian atlatls have hooks that are often carved with exquisite details and are a proof of deep aesthetic feelings (Las Caldas Venus, Fawn with birds).
Atlatls
Atlatls can be male or female, ie with a hook or a socket.
These two types have multiple variations, some of them still being used nowadays for hunting purposes. They have different names according to the various regions they are or were used: atlatl in northern and southern america, woomera in Australia, propulseur in French.. and propulsor in common english
I only build male atlatls that can be sculpted or not, with or without counterweights or banner-stones.
The atlats and darts I build are made after prehistoric artifacts or freely inspired by them but are all perfectly functionnal.
I have been using my own material for years during Prehistoric Weapons Shooting Contests, rather successfully since I became the 2005 european champion and got the tenth position at the International Standard Accuracy Contest (ISAC) in 2006. Other competitors also seem to like my atlatls: see this message (french)
