Neolithics symbolic tools, axes and adzes probably have contributed to the early deforestation for land farming.
Our hand-made axes come in several types:
• with polished or knapped blade
• With direct or deer-socket hafting.
Deer-socket hafting absorbs most of the impact and prevent the handle from splitting, but require much more work: indeed, the mortice and tenon joint between the deer-socket and the handle has to be as precise as possible.
Though their performances of these axes are way below our modern metal ones, they are nonetheless quite efficient and if rightly used, wood shavings will fly !
