Small flint tools

Prehistoric daily life relied on a whole range of specialized small tools — less spectacular than bifaces or points, but just as essential.

Flint burin
Burin — the "burin blow" detaches a narrow spall from the edge of the blade, at angles close to 90°.
Parrot-beak burin
Parrot-beak burin — a variant among truncation, dihedral or busked burins.
Flint awl
Awl — a point isolated by crescent-shaped retouch, used to bore leather, wood, or the eye of a needle.
Flint scraper
Scraper — abrupt to semi-abrupt retouch (60–90°), used on hides or plant materials.
Flint side-scraper
Side-scraper — retouched edges, used to scrape the inside of hides before tanning.
Backed flint knife
Backed knife — a blade with one edge blunted by abrupt retouch, for safer handling.
